This is the most commonly used position to treat any condition or for diagnostic purpose. ![]() In this position, the examination of pelvic region becomes easy. In dorsal recumbent position, the patient lie down on bed with knees bended and feet are flat on the surface of bed along with face looking upward. Dorsal and lateral type of recumbent position are of great importance. Various recumbent positions are used to examine a patient and also every position is checked to know about the most comfortable position regarding disease or surgery of the patient. The only difference between recumbent and supine position is that, the legs are bend at knees and the feet are flat on the bed with face up. This position is important in the patients with side injuries or organ damage. The word decubitus can also be used instead of recumbent. So the recumbent position may have various types like dorsal recumbent position, lateral recumbent position which is further divided into left lateral recumbent and right lateral recumbent position. The word recumbent is a Latin word means lying down or reclining. If the patient is lying on right side of body, then this position is known as right lateral recumbent position RLR and if the patient is lying on the left side of body, then this position is called left lateral recumbent position LLR.
